The UNFCCC-CASTT Adaptation Academy for Africa 2026, held from 18–21 August 2026 at RCMRD in Nairobi, brought together African countries to strengthen technical capacity on climate change adaptation planning, monitoring, and reporting under the Paris Agreement’s Enhanced Transparency Framework (ETF).
Held under the theme “Climate Transparency and Adaptation Action: Strengthening Adaptation Reporting under the ETF,” the Academy provided a platform for countries to exchange experiences, strengthen technical knowledge, and advance more effective approaches to adaptation reporting.
Kenya was represented by officers from the Climate Change Directorate: Dr. Joyce Kaino, Ms. Mercy Avisa, and Mr. Anthony Gitonga.
Kenya featured prominently throughout the Academy, sharing its experience through country presentations and panel discussions. The country presented lessons from the preparation of its first Biennial Transparency Report (BTR1) and participated in discussions on applying the Belém Adaptation Indicators in national reporting.
Kenya also shared practical insights on navigating the Technical Expert Review (TER) and Facilitative Multilateral Consideration of Progress (FMCP) processes, providing valuable lessons to other African countries undertaking similar adaptation reporting requirements.
The Academy provided Kenya with an opportunity to showcase progress while learning from the experiences and approaches of other African countries. The exchange contributes to strengthening the region’s collective capacity for consistent, credible, and useful adaptation monitoring and reporting under the ETF.
The engagement underscores Kenya’s commitment to strengthening climate transparency, improving adaptation tracking, and supporting evidence-based climate action across the country and the wider African region.
