Completion of the Loss and Damage Assessment for Lakes Baringo and Bogoria

The State Department for Environment and Climate Change, through the Climate Change Directorate, has completed a comprehensive Loss and Damage Assessment of the impacts associated with rising water levels in Lakes Baringo and Bogoria. The assessment is a significant step towards strengthening climate resilience and evidence-based decision-making in Baringo County and other climate-vulnerable regions. The assessment was undertaken through a multi-agency collaboration involving the Climate Change Directorate, the Department of Resource Surveys and Remote Sensing (DRSRS), Kenyatta University, and other key stakeholder institutions. It combined field assessments, geospatial analysis, and community consultations to document social, economic, non-economic, environmental, infrastructure, and related impacts caused by the prolonged rise in lake water levels. The findings provide an evidence base for appropriate adaptation and recovery interventions, stronger disaster risk reduction planning, and national and county policy on climate resilience and sustainable development. The assessment also supports Kenya’s Loss and Damage planning and access to climate finance by providing robust data for investment proposals and resource mobilization. Completion of the assessment underscores the Government of Kenya’s commitment to addressing climate impacts through coordinated action, scientific evidence, and stakeholder engagement. Its recommendations are expected to support long-term resilience, safeguard livelihoods and ecosystems, and reduce the vulnerability of communities around Lakes Baringo and Bogoria to future climate-related risks.
