Kenya has achieved a major milestone in advancing climate resilience and addressing the growing impacts of climate change, becoming the first country in Africa and the second globally to secure technical assistance from the Santiago Network on Loss and Damage.
Through the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Forestry, the State Department for Environment and Climate Change, and the Directorate of Climate Change, Kenya will receive technical assistance valued at approximately USD 700,000 to undertake a comprehensive assessment of climate-related loss and damage and project the impacts through to 2050.
The support will generate critical evidence to guide policy, planning, resource mobilisation, and investments aimed at reducing the increasing impacts of climate change and strengthening resilience across the country.
The achievement was officially communicated to Principal Secretary for Environment and Climate Change, Dr. Eng. Festus Ng’eno, by Elizabeth Carabine, Deputy Director, Santiago Network Secretariat, on the margins of the UNFCCC Subsidiary Bodies (SB64) Climate Meeting in Bonn, Germany.
The technical assistance will provide Kenya with an important evidence base for understanding current and future climate-related losses and damages, supporting the development of targeted interventions and strengthening the country’s capacity to respond to climate impacts.
The milestone underscores Kenya’s growing leadership in global climate action and its commitment to ensuring that loss and damage considerations are effectively integrated into national climate planning and resilience-building efforts.
