The Kenya Climate Change Knowledge Portal (KCCKP) is the official gateway to climate change information in Kenya, operated by the Climate Change Directorate.

Climate Change Directorate

The Climate Change Directorate (CCD) is Kenya's lead government agency on climate change, established under the Climate Change Act of 2016. The Directorate coordinates national climate change plans and actions, providing technical support to sectors and counties while ensuring Kenya meets its international climate commitments.

As the national focal point to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), CCD leads Kenya's engagement in international climate negotiations and oversees the implementation of the Paris Agreement commitments nationally.

Key Functions

The Climate Change Directorate carries out the following mandates under the Climate Change Act 2016.

Policy Coordination

Coordinating the implementation of the National Climate Change Action Plan (NCCAP) and ensuring alignment of sectoral policies with climate objectives.

Climate Finance

Mobilizing and coordinating climate finance from domestic and international sources, including the National Climate Change Fund.

MRV & Reporting

Operating the national MRV system for tracking greenhouse gas emissions and climate actions, and preparing reports to the UNFCCC.

Stakeholder Engagement

Facilitating engagement with counties, private sector, civil society, and international partners on climate change matters.

Knowledge Management

Maintaining the national climate change knowledge management system and providing technical support to stakeholders.

Capacity Building

Building institutional and technical capacity for climate action across national and county governments.

Kyoto Protocol ratified.

National Climate Change Response Strategy (NCCRS) launched.

2013

National Climate Change Action Plan (NCCAP 2013–2017) adopted.

2015

Second National Communication (NC2) submitted.

2015

National Adaptation Plan (NAP) 2015–2030 published.

2015

Kenya submits its Intended Nationally Determined Contribution (INDC) to the UNFCCC, which becomes Kenya’s first NDC upon ratification of the Paris Agreement.

2016

Kenya ratifies the Paris Agreement.

2016

Climate Change Act enacted.

2016

Climate Change Directorate established pursuant to Section 9 of the Climate Change Act, 2016.

2018

NCCAP 2018–2022 launched.

2020

Kenya submits its updated NDC with a 32% greenhouse gas emissions reduction target.

2022

Kenya assumes the chair of the Committee of African Heads of State and Government on Climate Change (CAHOSCC).

2023

NCCAP III (2023–2027) launched.

2023

Kenya and Singapore sign a memorandum of understanding for collaboration under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement.

2023

Africa Climate Summit hosted in Nairobi.

2023

Climate Change (Amendment) Act, 2023 enacted.

2024

Climate Change (Carbon Markets) Regulations, 2024 gazetted.

2024

Third National Communication (NC3) submitted.

2024

Kenya submits its first Biennial Transparency Report (BTR1), Initial Biennial Update Report (BUR1), and a standalone National Inventory Report (NIR).

2025

Kenya’s BTR1 undergoes the Technical Expert Review (TER) process.

2025

Kenya submits its Second NDC (NDC 2.0) for 2025–2035.

2025

Kenya and Switzerland sign an implementation agreement for cooperation under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement.

2025

Kenya and Sweden sign a bilateral framework agreement for engagement in cooperative approaches under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement.

2026

Kenya and Norway sign a statement of intent on a bilateral agreement for engagement under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement.

Kenya National Carbon Registry (KNCR) launched.

Kenya’s BTR1 undergoes the Facilitative Multilateral Consideration of Progress (FMCP) process.
